Here are some other things you can do in your kitchen to save energy:

§   Pots and pans should have tight covers and flat bottoms that match the size of the burner or heating unit.

§   Microwaves, electric frying pans, toaster ovens and grills are often quicker and more economical to use than an electrical range. The also help keep the kitchen cool on hot days.

§   Know what you want before you open the refrigerator. You’ll save energy by keeping the cool air inside.

§   Preheat only when baking bread or bread products; never for broiling.

§   Cook by time and temperature. Use a meat thermometer.

§   Don’t waste heat by peeking in the oven-heat escapes when the door is opened. Glass and ceramic baking dishes will allow you to cook at lower temperatures than metal.

§   Pack the freezer full for efficient operation, but allow room for air to circulate in a well-stocked refrigerator.

§   Never allow more than a quarter-inch of ice to build up on a manual-defrost refrigerator.
