Cool Air, Hot Air

Until now, we have discussed how to keep warm in the winter. But, keeping yourself and your house cool in the summer is also just as important. There are a number of ways you can do this. Always remember this - energy is important. Even though it is essential that you keep yourself cool, it is also just as important to conserve energy and not waste it for our own needs. Here are some tips in keeping the cool air in and the warm air out.

Natural shade is the cheapest way to stop the sun's rays. You can plant trees that lose their leaves in winter on the sunny side of the house. Most trees let the sunlight through during the winter and keep it out in the summer.

The air conditioner is sole source of cool air to us during the summer. Since a energy crisis in 1973, air condition has become very efficient and saves energy, instead of carelessly wasting it. Every air condition unit now has an energy efficiency rating (EER) number. An higher number indicates a more efficient appliance. A high EER rating for an air conditioner means more heat is removed while using less energy.

Awnings over sunny windows will lower the inside temperature of our houses, as will reflective film shades, solar screens and drapes. This will cool down the house a considerable amount than you think, and will also save energy and current bills.

If your brought your air conditioner before 1980, replacing it with a new unit with an all-round EER of 8 or higher is probably a good idea. it may cost a little, but believe it or not, in the long run, it will definitely save you more money than you spent on it.
