If your home insulation doesn't meet "R" standard for your climate, save energy by upgrading it. Here are some tips to tighten up insulation around your house:

"To
save money on your heating bill, you may want to turn your thermostat back to
60 degrees or 55 degrees at night. A convenient way to be sure you do this
each night is to install a clock thermostat.
It automatically turns your thermostat down every night, then turns it up in
the morning before you get up. You won't be uncomfortable with the
temperature–or with your heating bill."
Storm windows can be fitted into your existing ones. Most of the time, you can fit your own storm windows. There are two types of storm windows. For the single type storm windows, you would need only plastic sheet, glass, or rigid plastic. For, combination types, you would also need plastic strips, double sided tapes, and wood strips.
You
can install insulations such as fiberglass or rockwool rolls or batts in attic
floors and over basement walls and ceilings.
Sun-screens and colored vinyl can be used to keep out the heat but allow light in.
